This past December, the Rotaract Amsterdam Club Nachwacht International had the opportunity to host the annual Rotaract Christmas Gala in the Netherlands. Each year a different Rotaract Club in The Netherlands hosts the event and invites fellow Rotaract and Rotary International members from across the country and from international clubs to join them for the event and raise money for a cause chosen by the hosting club.
The 2015 Gala was organized to collect money for our main project this year, supporting the Leefkringhuis Noord in Amsterdam North. This is a shelter for children and women who are in need of a (temporary) safe place to stay because they have troubles at home. Prior to the Gala we began our relationship with the Leefkringhuis, first by having their founder speak at our club meeting and thereafter visiting the children and mother’s for the first time. Since this first meeting we have made an effort to organize a fun activity with the Leefkringhuis each month.
The Christmas Gala took place in the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam. This beautiful five star hotel has exquisite original Jugendstil features and is very closely connected to the rich nautical history of Amsterdam and ideal for its central location. More than 200 guests from various Rotaract and Rotary clubs in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe attended to support the cause. With music from DJ Nijkie, a fun photo booth and a Great Gatsby theme, the evening was a lot of fun and a great success in raising funds for the Leefkringhuis!
Donations for the silent auction which helped to raise a total of more than 1000 Euros for our cause were contributed by: the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Mokum Boot Amsterdam, Splendor, and the Grand Hotel Amrath.
The funds raised at the gala will both be donated to the Leefkringhuis for items they need as well as support our future activities with the women and children each month.
